PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Smithville (MO) Parks & Recreation is here to bring our community together with fun events, youth programs, sports leagues, and beautiful parks. From family activities to sports leagues, we have something for everyone!

OUR PROGRAMS

Presentational Youth Soccer visual

Youth Soccer - Fall 2026

Kick off the season with our rec soccer league, where kids of all skill levels come to learn, play, and have a blast! From preschoolers discovering the joy of the game to middle schoolers sharpening their moves, there’s a place for everyone on the field.

Each player will receive a jersey and an end-of-season medal to celebrate their hard work. Parents, please provide socks, shin guards, and (optional) a soccer ball: size 3 for PreK-2nd grade and size 4 for 3rd-8th grade. Soccer goes by grades not ages, based on 2026 fall school grade. Can move up one age group only, but cannot move down.

Fee: $75

Practices: Practices begin week of August 17. Each team will have one weekday practice (+1 optional weekend practice until games begin). 

Games: 
Each team is guaranteed six games played only on Saturdays | (1)9/12, (2)9/19, (3)9/26, (4)10/3, (5)10/10, (6)10/17, (7)10/31 (Delayed start on 9/19 for CIA 5K | No games on 10/24/Haunted Campground | Make up dates 11/7, 11/14, if needed)

Volunteer Coaching:
 The recreation sports programs are dependent upon volunteer coaches. If you would like to coach, please click the "volunteer" tab below! The teams' practice schedules are chosen by the volunteer coach around their schedule. If you would like to guarantee a particular practice day/time for your child, you are welcome to volunteer coach!

Registration:

Youth T-Ball - Fall 2026

Batter up! Join our fun-filled t-ball league, perfect for little sluggers ages 4-6 just starting their baseball journey. This program is designed to teach the fundamentals of hitting, catching, and teamwork in an exciting and supportive environment. Each player will receive a team jersey, hat, and an end-of-season medal to celebrate their efforts. Parents will provide a glove and tennis shoes - no cleats required!

Fee: $55

Practices: Two practices are guaranteed before games begin. Practices are held on Fridays 9/5, 9/12. Practices are dropped once games begin. Practices will be held at Heritage Park and Smith's Fork Park.

Games: Each team is guaranteed 4 games. Games are held on Fridays: 9/19, 9/26, 10/3, 10/10 (two make-up dates 10/17 and 10/24) Games are held at Heritage Park.

Volunteer Coaching: The recreation sports programs are dependent upon volunteer coaches. If you would like to coach, please click the "volunteer" tab below! The teams' practice schedules are chosen by the volunteer coach around their schedule. If you would like to guarantee a particular practice day/time for your child, you are welcome to volunteer coach!

Youth Volleyball - Fall 2026

Bump, set, spike, and have fun this season with SPR recreation volleyball! This co-ed rec league for 3rd-4th and 5th-6th graders is designed to help players build skills, grow confidence, and enjoy friendly competition in a fun and supportive environment. Teams are balanced with mixed ability levels, making it a great fit for both beginners and returning players. Each participant will receive a team jersey and end-of-season medal. Players should bring clean athletic shoes and athletic shorts or pants; knee pads are recommended but not required.

Fee: $75

Practices: Teams will practice once per week, held on Mondays at 5:30 or 7:30PM. Practices will begin August 24. No practice on Labor Day 9/7.

Games: 
Each team is guaranteed six games played only on Wednesdays | There will be some travel to Platte City + Kearney for games | (1)9/16, (2)9/23, (3)9/30, (4)10/7, (5)10/14, (6)10/21, (7)10/28 if needed

Location:
 Practices held at Smithville High School. Games at SHS, Platte City Middle School, and Kearney High School.

Pickleball Lessons: June Session - Spring 2026

Spring pickleball lessons are here! This 4-week 45 min session is designed to teach at a beginner level/intro to pickleball and an advanced/beginner level. Led by Scott Pearson.

Beginner lessons cover scoring, basic rules of play, basic techniques for different shots, court etiquette, basic strategy.

Advanced-Beginner lessons cover mastering the four main shots (serve, drive, dink, and drop), doubles strategy, when to switch, what is stacking, review court etiquette, how to approach "open play".

Let's Learn Mahjong: June 6 - FULL - Summer 2026

Have you heard of Mahjong? This classic tile-based game has made a big comeback and is one of the most popular games to play with friends right now! Known for its strategy, social play, and just the right mix of challenge and fun, American Mahjong is perfect for game nights and social gatherings. Join us on June 6 from 1:00-3:30 PM for an American Mahjong 101 class led by Certified Oh My Mahjong instructor Melinda Barrett. This beginner-friendly class covers the basics of tiles, rules, and gameplay so you’ll feel confident jumping into a game. The class is open to the first 16 enrollees, and all game essentials are included—along with National Mah Jongg League cards to borrow during the lesson and a handy tip sheet to take home for continued practice.

Presentational wildHERness Women's Hike (16+): June 20 visual

wildHERness Women's Hike (16+): June 20 - Summer 2026

Join us for a refreshing morning on the trail, a women’s-only guided hike designed to encourage connection, confidence, and adventure in the outdoors. This program is hosted in partnership with wildHERness and led by outdoor educator Amy Rush Howard, who will guide participants on a medium-level hike while sharing helpful tips for building confidence and comfort on the trail.

The hike will take place on the Lake Remote Trail at Smith’s Fork Park, meeting at the Smithville Lake Spillway at 9:00 AM. The program will last approximately 1–1.5 hours. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and are encouraged to bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen if needed. This hike is for women ages 16 and older, and spots are limited. Pre-registration is required and registration will not be available on-site. A wildHERness waiver will need to be signed in person before participating.

wildHERness is an organization dedicated to creating a community of strong, adventurous women through outdoor education and empowerment. Their programs encourage independence, build outdoor skills, and provide welcoming, pressure-free opportunities for women of all experience levels to explore and enjoy the outdoors.

Presentational Howl-O-Ween Vendor Registration: October 3 visual

Howl-O-Ween Vendor Registration: October 3 - Fall 2026

Trick-or-treating is for pups too! Join Smithville Parks and Recreation and Clay County Parks on October 3rd for Howl-O-Ween! No registration is required to attend the event - this registration is for vendors/businesses to reserve a 12x12 spot to set up a booth. This event is free to the community. Only requirement for vendors is to bring treats to pass out to trick-or-TREATing pups and be some sort of a business or organization that services dogs or animals! Spots are limited to the first 15 vendors. Vendors will be contacted with more details closer to the event. One booth per organization/business please. SPR provides pup cups (whipped cream), a photobooth, and a costume contest for all participants with prizes. This event is rain or shine!

When: October 3rd 11am-12:30pm Vendors can start setting up as early at 10am. Must be set up by 10:45am.
Where: Clay County Dog Park 17325 Old Jefferson Highway, Smithville, MO 64089 - vendor set up will be in the grass area to the left of the fenced dog park, and to the right of the paved trail. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be cancelled due to ground conditions in that area.
Fee: There are no vendor booth fees - please provide a give-away at your booth for trick-or-treating!

Smithville Parks and Recreation teams up with Kearney and Platte City Parks and Recreation to deliver a top-notch league experience filled with exciting games and new friendships. Each player will receive a jersey, hat, and an end-of-season medal to commemorate their season. Parents, don’t forget to provide a glove and consider a helmet (recommended but not required).

Fee: $75 ($25 late fee if registered after the deadline)

Games: 
Each team is guaranteed 6 games. Games are only held Mondays-Thursdays at 6:00PM and 7:45PM. Games will begin the week of April 27. Some travel to Kearney and Platte City will be involved.
