HISTORY OF FOOTBALL IN ELK RIVER

Elk River has a long history of improving and growing football as a whole!

Elk River High School Football has been in existence since 1892. The Elk River Quarterback Club was founded in the fall of 1958. The club's predecessor was the Commercial Club made up of Elk River business people who supported the local athletics program. In many cases the club would provide transportation for the players to their rural homes and farms allowing them to play football.

In 1971, Elk River High School Football Head Coach Terry McLean requested that John Dietz startup an organized youth football association in Elk River. Dietz was able to put in all of the startup and organizational work to get the youth football association up and running but was called into armed service duty before the first season started. Dietz requested that Larry Krieg take over running the upcoming youth football association in his absence. Thankfully Krieg took on what Dietz started and that was the start of what is today’s Elk River Youth Football Association.

In 2017, Elk River Parks and Recreation and the Elk River Quarterback Club entered into discussions about the flag football program in Elk River. In 2019 the transition of the flag football program in Elk River from Elk River Parks and Recreation to the Elk River Quarterback Club was completed and Elk River Flag Football was up and running.

In 2020, members of the coaching staff from Elk River High School Football and the Elk River Quarterback Club entered into discussions about creating a 7 on 7 football program in Elk River. In January 2021, Elk River 7 on 7 Football was launched.

5 years after it began, in late 2023, Elk River Flag Football became it's own standalone organization.  This gives the program the ability to continue it's ability to serve our youth as well the potential to increase our offerings.

Elk River has a long proud history of and are fully committed to the sport of football from Pre-K on up!
