"Coaches" - really Activity Leaders - Needed!!
PLEASE NOTE, to sign up you have to "enroll" yourself as a volunteer, separately from your child. Be sure to do this at the same time (add both enrollments to your cart), as you will get a $10 DISCOUNT! Click here for instructions for adding yourself to coach.
Let's be honest. This isn't coaching. What you are doing is leading activities (literally, playing games, but not your typical "game of soccer"). These "games" are things like Simon Says (a great way to introduce literally the only rule of soccer you need to teach, which is to not touch the ball with your hands), Red Light Green Light, What's The Time Mr Fox, Score A Goal (which is exactly that), and others that we will teach you. There is even a guide in our downloads section of how the games work, along with an easy list for you to bring with you on your phone or printed out so you can remember what to do next. Pro-tip: Always finish the practice with the kid-favorite "Messy Back Yard" and a team cheer.
We hear again and again how people aren't sure if they could be a good coach for JP Children's Soccer and then, after the season is done, they tell us how much fun they had doing it. Plus it's a great way to get some exercise into a busy schedule! And you'll never be able to walk around JP again without a kid recognizing you as their FIRST COACH. If you need one more reason, this is NOT A DROP-OFF LEAGUE - so you have to be there anyway, and parents are responsible if their child needs something.
No soccer experience is necessary and we provide training and tips. We try to have 3 co-coaches per team so no coach has to make every practice.
At JP Children’s Soccer, our coaches focus on providing a fun physical activity around soccer by using positive reinforcement. Since we cater to young children, coaches play fun games that develop basic soccer skills. Scores are not kept so as to focus on the players and the positive aspects of teamwork and athletic skills.
The ONLY rules of soccer you need to know that you are not supposed to touch the ball with your hands, and that you are supposed to have fun. Oh, also, that if the ball goes in a net you can shout GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!
Other than leading activities, you (or your co-leaders) are responsible for attending a 1 hour introductory session the Sunday before the season starts, Emailing your team at the start and throughout the season as needed, completing Concussion Training, and (between co-leaders) bringing the nets, cones, and balls (that we will provide) to practices on time. That's it!
Concussion Training
Concussions can happen in any sport.
The Heads Up Online Training Course from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is required for all Activity Leaders of JPCS. The city of Boston requires this.
Additionally, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) offers a free online course to help coaches, officials, parents, and players recognize and manage concussion. To take that course, select "Massachusetts" under "Please Select Your State," and then click the Order button (The course is free, even though you have to click "Order.")
Each season, co-coaches are needed to help make JP Children's Soccer a continuous success. It is never too late to volunteer!
