MPRB Adult Spring Broomball Bulletin


Broomball Bulletin:

  • All managers must read the bulletin carefully before registering.
  • All registrations are final, no refunds unless due to medical/illness or program cancellation.
  • All players on the roster must be at least 18 years of age and adhere to the sport rules and rules listed in this bulletin. Participants waive, release & discharge any & all claims for damages for personal injury, death or property damage which may have, or which may hereafter accrue to players as a result of participation from this activity.
  • Teams must remain in good standing with the MPRB athletic program. 

General Information:

Team Registration:

  • All registration will be done online. 
  • Standard Registration opens October 21st at 7am
  • League Fees:
    • $325/team for standard registration
    • 6 game schedule 

League Fees & Cancellations:

  • League fees are based on 6 games
  • Teams will be scheduled for 6 games
  • We guarantee 5 games (not counting forfeits)
  • Make up games will be scheduled or refunds given to teams playing fewer than 6 games
  • Teams that do not play at least 5 games due to weather cancellations will be issued refunds
  • The first league cancellation (entire league) will be rescheduled

    Minneapolis City Broomball Tournament:

    • *New Format*: double elimination
    • $125/team
    • Register your team by January 16
      • This is separate from your team's league registration
    • Only regular season MPRB teams w/t a completed roster on file will be allowed to participate
    • Seeding: Tournament seeding will be left to the sole discretion of the league director
      • When possible, the team with the better record will get the higher seed
    • A & B tournaments are determined during the season
      • It is possible to be placed in the opposite division from league play based on season record
    • Weather permitting the tournament will take place on the following dates:
      • Friday January 30th- weeknight games will be in the evening
      • Saturday January 31st- weekend game times can be morning, afternoons, or nights

      Player Registration:

      • Rosters will be completed by managers.
      • Maximum of 20 people are allowed on rosters.
      • Playing of non-registered and/or ineligible players is an automatic forfeit if protested (in writing) by opponent within 48 hours of league competition or before the game is completed during the city tournament

      Divisions:

      • Contact the league director if you are unsure about your classification
      • For City Tournament play,  player may register and play in only one classification (ie. A, B, or C), but may play on any combination of teams at that level among Men's, Women's, Co-Ed, and/or Open
      • Levels of Play:
        • A: Extremely competitive and highly skilled leagues for experienced teams
        • Upper B: Recommended that teams registering in this division have a majority of players who have played in MPRB and/or other leagues and have finished top three in their league consistently; teams should be ready for a high level of play
        • B: Teams who have experience playing and are looking for a competitive game; majority of teams fall into this category
        • Lower B: Less competitive B teams; closer to a recreation league
        • C: Teams are looking for a recreation/non-competitive league; also includes teams newer to the sport and still learning the rules, equipment, and how the game is played
      • Open Leagues: no gender requirements; more recreational leagues; Not intended for all-male teams
      • Please register for the appropriate division and level of play
      • The league director reserves the right to change the classification status of a team that is believed to be registered incorrectly

          • 1/4, 1/11, 1/18, 1/25, 2/1, and 2/8
        • Mondays:
          • 1/5, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26, 2/2, and 2/9
        • Tuesdays:
          • 1/6, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27, 2/3, and 2/10
        • Wednesdays:
          • 1/7, 1/14, 1/21, 1/28, 2/4, and 2/11
        • Thursdays:
          • 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, and 2/12
        • *Additional Saturday's may be scheduled as make ups if necessary*

        Game Times:

        • Monday-Thursday: 6, 7, 8, and 9pm
        • Saturday & Sunday: 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30, and 4:30pm
          • Super Bowl Sunday- games start at 11am
        • Officials will be scheduled for each game

            League Play:

            Games:

            • Games will be played with an Official Outdoor Ball (manufactured by Baden or Acacia)
              • Managers are responsible for providing a game ball
            • Game time:
              • Two 25-minute running time halves
              • Final 3 minutes of the second half will be stop time if there is a one goal difference or tie game

            Manager Duties:

            • Please review city-wide manager policies on our adult sports guidelines
            • Make sure that you have a full team and at least one reserve for all games
            • Do not let your players face suspension by allowing them to argue a call
            • You are responsible for taking charge of your team's and your spectators' conduct; abusive language, improper drinking, littering, and other irresponsible acts will not be tolerated
            • Any schedule information, changes, make-ups, or other league information will be sent to you. It is your responsibility to pass this information along to your team
            • Know the rules. Tell your players the rules. Knowing the rules will help the game run smoothly and allow your team to concentrate on playing

            Uniforms & Equipment:

            • Teams must have some kind of distinguishing markings such as jerseys, jackets, scrimmage jerseys, etc.
              • Teams are STRONGLY encouraged to have both a light and dark jersey available for each game
            • Goalie Equipment:
              • Required: Helmet with face mask (cannot be a football helmet)
              • Prohibited: Goalie style hockey leg pads, catcher's mitt (baseball and/or hockey)
            • All leg pads must be covered
            • MPRB Does not provide any personal playing equipment (ie. shoes, stick)
            • *New 2026*: helmets (hockey, bike, etc.) are required for ALL players

            MPRB Rules of Play:

            Rules of Play:

            • Minneapolis operates under closed competition (allows for exception from ABA Broomball Alliance Rulebook to fulfill our recreational needs)
            • ABA Broomball Rules will govern all play locally with the below exceptions
            • Bench area on the same side of the rink for both teams
            • Icing: called for all levels of play
              • Ball cleared from defensive zone through the attacking zone beyond the opponent's goal line
              • Goaltender must be in the crease or retreating to the crease when the ball crosses center ice red line and must not play the ball for icing to be called
              • If the ball goes through the crease (and not into the goal), icing is waived
              • Instant icing will be called (does not have to be touched by either team)
            • Stick checking: Stick may be lifted at the ball but neither slashed nor held
              • If a player attempts to disrupt another player's swing by extending their broom into the arc of the shot from behind, interference or slashing may be called depending on the severity of the attempt to prevent play
            • Delayed offsides: called like hockey, delayed until all offending players clear the zone
            • Offsides face off: located at the offending team's blue line faceoff spot 
            • Delayed penalty: if a delayed penalty may lead to further altercations, the whistle will be blown immediately, and penalties will be assessed
            • Ball handling:
              • Hand: the ball cannot be held on the ice or intentionally dire Foot: kick passes to a teammate are legal.
              • Kicking the Ball: A player or goaltender may kick the ball in any direction while the ball is on the ice. If the attacking team kicks the ball into the opposing teams goal crease, an immediate whistle will occur. No player or goaltender shall "punt" or "drop kick" a ball at any time., if this violation occurs, a minor penalty shall be assessed. 
              • You may kick the ball twice, but the third contact must be by a stick.
            • Playing the ball waist to shoulder with the broom is a turnover
            • Playing the ball above the shoulder will result in a 2-minute penalty
            • Checking: no body checking allowed
              • To be a body check, the player must be playing the opponent's body in an attempt to gain control of the ball
              • NOT defined as two players coming together and making contact while attempting to play the ball
            • Crease Rule:
              • Only the goalie is allowed in the crease when the ball is not in the crease
              • Anyone is allowed in the crease when the ball is in the crease
            • Penalties:
              • 2-minute minor
              • 5-minute major
              • 10-minute misconduct
            • Faceoffs will be used when the ball is frozen by the goalie or the net is knocked out of place. All other turnovers result in a faceoff with the offending team being penalized one zone

            • A team must have 6 players to start the game, or a forfeit will be declared

            8-Player Rules:

            • No offsides
            • Windmill shot allowed (men's league only)
            • Co-Ed
              • Windmill shot not allowed
              • Head of broom must remain below the shoulder on the backswing and follow through
              • A team may start and complete a game with 7 players
              • Team composition must be either 4 males and 4 females or either combination of 4 and 3
              • If a male is injured during play, he may be replaced by a female player
            • Open
              • Windmill shot not allowed
              • Head of broom must remain below the shoulder on the backswing and follow through
              • A team may start and complete a game with 7 players
              • Team composition can be any combination of male and female players

            6-Player Rules:

            • Windmill shots are allowed
            • Playing the ball with the stick waist and below is allowed
            • Offsides will be enforced on rinks with a blue line
              • Otherwise, offsides will be played red line in and red line out
            • Co-Ed teams must have 3 male and 3 female players on the ice at all times

            Player Rules:

            • Offsides will be called. Blue line in Red line out.
            • Windmill shots allowed
            • A team may start and complete a game with 6 players
            • Team composition on the ice is three males and three females
            • If a male is injured during play, he may be replaced by a female player
            • Playing the ball with the stick below the waist is allowed
            • Playing the ball with the stick from waist to shoulder is a turnover
            • Turnovers are face-offs and are penalized 1 zone
            • Faceoffs will be used if the goalie covers the ball or the net comes loose

            Conduct & Eligibility:

            • The league director retains the right to make suspensions longer or remove players from the league at any time
            • The MPRB reserves the right to modify any rule during the season at the sole discretion of the league director
            • A non-registered player participating in a game is an automatic forfeit provided a protest is filed with proof to the Athletic Office within 48 hours
            • Managers may at any time during the game request a player of the opposing team to sign their name to be compared with the roster on file with the Athletics Office
            • The request needs to be made in the presence of the umpire, and the umpire needs to sign the request
            • Should a player refuse to cooperate in signing their name, it will be assumed that the player is ineligible and the game will be forfeited
            • Players are asked to have their driver's license or ID for verification if a protest is requested
            • Penalties for violation of eligibility rules:
              • Suspension of the ineligible player for the remainder of the season
              • Suspension of the manager if the manager was aware of the violation
              • Loss of all games in which the player participated and a protest was filed
