A daily journal from Sunny

Day one 6/26/23

The new Junior Park Explorers recited their pledge to help keep the parks clean. During the name game, we made new friends and learned the importance of knowing the number of people in our hiking party and taking a mental picture of what they are wearing in case someone gets lost on the hike. We were excited to learn from our friend from Texas Conservation Alliance, Jose Lopez. He quizzed our knowledge on the state tree, flower, and more. Mr. Lopez led us on a hike around the park to identify native plants, and we even got to go fishing for tadpoles in the creek. After much-needed water breaks, we searched for the perfect branch or twig to make our Pendent Banner for our badges. Once we decorated, glued, and hung our banner, it was snack time. The day flew by, and we enjoyed playing with our friends on the playground. Tomorrow is conservation day. I can't wait to see the new Junior Park Rangers in the morning!

Day two 6/27/23

Today, campers had a blast at camp! They started the day by reviewing their Junior Park Explorer pledge and learning about plant life cycles and conservation from Mr. Rudy. The park hike was full of adventures, including creek crossings, tree root jumps, and a chance to snap a photo with Mr. Chambers at the famous Chambers Park mural. After a snack break, the campers designed their own parks with all the amenities and made planters using recycled water bottles. They're excited to see their lima beans grow throughout the summer. Did you know it takes two trees to produce enough oxygen for a family of four? Fun fact! Tomorrow is the discovery of navigation and geocaching!

Day three 6/28/23

The park explorers had a blast on day three of camp. The campers learned about Navigation and tested their compass skills in a scavenger hunt through Chambers Park. After enjoying some ice pops and open recreation time, the artists in the group created their own park ranger on a blank canvas. The older campers even created a scavenger hunt of their own to be tested on the final day. The day ended with snack time and a favorite song before heading to the playground. Although everyone will be missed, the final day promises to be exciting with camp t-shirts, earned patches, and SPLASH PAD DAY!

Day four 6/29/23

It's the last day of camp, and wow, did it start with a big bang! All the campers got their awesome Junior Park Explorer Camp T-Shirts today. And guess what? It was time to receive the official Sunny The Explorer Patch too! We put those patches on the special Pendent banner we made on the first day of camp. Super cool, right? But that's not all. Throughout the year, campers can collect more patches by doing fun activities from the Activity Guide.

Today, our amazing campers earned their patches, and some even earned the special PLEDGE badge! How awesome is that? We had two very special visitors today. First, we met Mrs. Kimberly from the Angelina River Authority. She taught us all about litter and water pollution and how we can help keep our streams clean. She even gave us coloring sheets and a net bag to collect litter when we were out and about. How thoughtful! And you won't believe who else came to see us. It was none other than Mrs. Aubrey Prunty, the talented person who illustrated Sunny! We became forever friends with our visitors, and after all the excitement, we headed to the Splash Pad to have a splashing good time! What a fantastic way to end our camp adventure!

The campers joining us on June 26, 2023,, were the first group to complete the exciting Junior Park Explorer camp. They bravely took the official Pledge to be responsible for keeping our parks clean and green. Even though our time together has come to an end, I just know that these amazing Explorers will continue to inspire their friends and family to help take care of our parks too! We're not saying goodbye, but rather, we'll see you again in the parks! And don't forget to keep a lookout for me, Sunny, as I scurry around the trails, walkways, and streams, working hard to make sure that Lufkin City Parks stay wonderfully clean and forever GREEN!
